Best Fifa Football Awards: Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola criticises shortlist

Manchester City

Manchester City picked up the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Community Shield trophies in 2018-19

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has questioned the absence of his players on the shortlist for the 2019 Best Fifa Men’s Player award.

Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah are among the 10 nominated men.

City won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup last season.

“Maybe we have to win five or six or get 250 points to be considered next season,” said Guardiola.

“I don’t think there is one player who had a better season than Bernardo Silva last season, even winning [the Nations League] with Portugal.

“These awards are normally when you win the Champions League. We were in the last stages and the other competitions do not count, are not important.”

Guardiola’s side also won the 2018 Community Shield but were eliminated by Spurs in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

No Manchester City player has ever won the PFA Player of the Year award, even though the team have won the Premier League in four of the past eight seasons.

In 2011-12, Arsenal’s Robin van Persie was the player of the season, two years later Liverpool’s Luis Suarez picked up the prize, with Salah and Van Dijk winning in 2017-18 and 2018-19 respectively.

“In eight years, winning four times the Premier League is quite good,” added Guardiola. “And never one player – not David [Silva], not Vincent [Kompany], not Yaya [Toure] – won, not even suggested.

“Huge respect for Mohamed Salah, but Kevin de Bryune that season when we made 100 points [in 2017-18] was above and beyond the normal situations.

“I cannot imagine Real Madrid and Barcelona winning four titles and not one single player being there.”

Six City players were included in the 2018-19 PFA Team of the Year – goalkeeper Ederson, defender Aymeric Laporte, midfielders Fernandinho and Bernardo Silva and forwards Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling.

The shortlist for the Best Fifa Men’s Player was selected by a panel of former players and managers, and the result will be announced at an event in Milan on 23 September, following a public vote.

Cyrus Christie: Fulham investigate incident after player says sister was hit and racially abused

Cyrus Christie

Cyrus Christie came on as a first-half substitute in Fulham’s 1-0 defeat at Barnsley

Fulham will take the “strongest action possible” after full-back Cyrus Christie alleged that his sister was hit and racially abused by fans during Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Barnsley.

Christie said on Twitter after the game: “To the Fulham fan that decided to hit my sister at the game today and his wife who justified his action with racist remarks I hope you’re proud of yourself and feel like a big man.

“You’ll get what’s coming to you. Regardless how you felt about the result your actions are shameful.”

The Whites, relegated to the Championship last season, said in a statement: “Fulham Football Club is investigating an incident which took place in the away end at the Barnsley v Fulham fixture this afternoon.

“Should the perpetrators be identified, the club will be taking the strongest possible action.”

Republic of Ireland international Christie, 26, joined Fulham from Middlesbrough in January 2018 and has made 33 appearances for the club.

In November 2017 and April 2018 he shared racist abuse he had received on social media.

PSG beat Rennes to win Trophee des Champions in China

Paris St-Germain

Paris St-Germain have now won the Trophee des Champions nine times, including every year from 2013

Paris St-Germain fought back from a goal behind to beat Rennes 2-1 in the Trophee des Champions in China.

French Cup winners Rennes took an early lead against Ligue 1 champions PSG when an unmarked Adrien Hunou finished from Benjamin Bourigeaud’s cross.

But PSG, without the suspended Neymar, equalised 12 minutes into the second half when Kylian Mbappe scored into an empty net after Pablo Sarabia’s pass.

PSG won it with a spectacular free-kick from Angel di Maria in the 73rd minute.

The Argentine had only been on the pitch for 12 minutes after replacing Ander Herrera, who joined PSG on a free transfer last month after his Manchester United contract expired.

The match took place at the Shenzhen Universiade Sports Centre stadium in south east China and PSG have now won the season-opening trophy seven years in a row, beating the previous record of Lyon’s six successive victories between 2002 and 2007.
